15. Newport – 16 October 2011
Newport, Rhode Island. Yacht racing – that was all I knew about the place. I had lived in Perth, Western Australia for quite a few years, and knew about the America’s Cup from being close to Fremantle. So now, I was at the other end of the world, at the famous Newport Yacht harbor. Yes, it is true that hosting of the America’s Cup moves around, but Newport is what I think of.
Flew into Washington DC (Ronald Reagan Airport), and drove up I95 to get to Newport. Once outside of the DC crush traffic, it was a nice drive. I arrived the day before in order to pick up my race packet, and wandered around the town and around the harbor. It was perfect weather, and I had a nice dinner at a little pub place.
Last race for 2011. I enjoyed running here – it was good run, ran slowly but was not really in a hurry as it was a pretty course. But that would be the end of the slow pace races until 2013!
