Arizona

7. Apache Junction – 20 February 2011

Picture this — sitting in a small café in Scottsdale, Arizona. It is the night before the Lost Dutchman half marathon, and I am about to eat a plate of chicken and waffles as my pre-race carb load dinner. Never saw that in any running manual.

The following day, clear and cool Arizona desert weather — lined up for the race. Apache Junction is kind of out in the middle of nowhere — mobile home parks, lots of open road, cactus and desert type stuff.

I don’t know if the route was anywhere near the Lost Dutchman mine, but it didn’t really matter. The Superstition Mountains were in view most of the race, and it was a good one.
